Will a later bedtime cause my 17m old to 'sleep in'?
Will a later bedtime cause my 17m old to ’sleep in’?
My little girl has an internal alarm clock that gets her up at 4am each day. I cuddle her for a few minutes and can get her back to sleep, but she is really UP for the day by 5-5:30am. She sleeps in her own crib, in her own room and has one daytime nap from 12:30-2:30. We have a regular bedtime routine that consists of bath, stories, a small snack and then bed. She is in bed by 7pm (shows signs of being tired at 6pm) and sleeps throughout the night (until 4am). I do try and keep her awake longer, but she is just so tired, and she gets very grumpy. **Advice from those who have gone through this only please!** Will keeping her up longer (slowly of course) result in her ’sleeping in’ eventually?
I appreciate answers so far …
Note – her nap time is fixed – she is at the babysitters 5 days a week, and that is when all the other kids nap
Note – I don’t want her to sleep MORE, just different times
8pm to 6am would be heavenly
most likely.

Not necessarily, but you can try!

It might work, but I would still recommend putting her to bed if she gets fussy around 7:00pm.

no not always. my son gets up at the same time every morning no matter what time he goes to bed. I would love for him to be a child that sleeps in, but it just does not happen. I would just stick with the routine you have. looks like she is getting plenty of sleep.

I would keep setting back bedtime by 10 minutes every week or maybe even every two weeks. It is extremely hard to get a child to sleep at the hours you wish them to.
If you can eventually set back bedtime an hour later and keep a strict schedule it might work!
Good luck!

Normally I would say no…that sleep begets sleep and a later bedtime might make her overtired, getting up earlier/more often.
BUT….if your case, it seems that your daughter’s internal clock tells her she needs 10-11 hours of sleep each night, which is very very common. If you would like her to get up at 6am, put her to bed closer to 8pm. But make sure that you gradually stretch out her bedtime, don’t all of a sudden put her to bed an hour later than normal. Stretch it out over a few weeks or so, adding a few minutes every night or so. Once she starts getting up a little later, she will nap later and in turn be able to stay up a bit later. Good luck, I know how frustrating it can be!!!

most kids are only gonna sleep about 10-12 hours so if u put a little kid to bed at 7 they’ll wake tp from 5-7 am that is really early
My little girl goes to bed at 8 and wakes up around 7-730 and takes 1 nap a day
so yes a later bed time will cause them to sleep in longer

No the later bedtime will most probably not help, especially as you say she is tired from 6pm on.
What could work is shift the nap forward, so she naps say from 2-4pm. Then you might have a bedtime around 7-7.30pm without her being too tired yet and can actually make her sleep longer.
Also make sure her room is absolutely shaded from first sunlight or morning noises…
Good luck!

I would say probably not. Both of my kids were very much like yours: They were up (very early) just like clockwork, ready for a nap at just the same time everyday, and when they were tired, they were very tired.
If you really want to try to adjust her sleep schedule, what I would suggest is, instead of trying to keep her up longer, give her a second nap. At around 5:30, lay her down and let her take a cat nap for about 45 minutes, then get her up. Keep her up for a little while by playing with her, giving her a little snack, and then a bath. Then put her to bed at 8 or 8:30. You may find that she then sleeps that 10 hours and gets up at 6:30 ish instead, but if your kids are like mine, she’ll get up at her regular time anyway. I still feel that my method is better though, because trying to keep a kid up later that is already tired is only going to make a cranky kid and frustrated mom.
